7 Types Of Zirconia Refractories Used In Glass Furnaces

Zirconia refractories is widely used in the melter, superstructure, sidewall and throat of glass furnaces. There are mainly 7 types of zirconia refractories used in glass industry including Fused Cast AZS Block, Fused Cast High Zirconia Block, Zircon Brick, Zircon Mullite Brick, AZS Ramming Mass, Rebound AZS Refractory and Sintered AZS. 

Fused Cast AZS Block

Fused cast AZS block, also called fused cast zircon corundum block and electro fused cast AZS block, is abbreviated as AZS because it contains Al2O3－ZrO2－SiO2. Its crystal structure consists of corundum crystal, baddeleyite crystal and a small amount of glass phase. It has great corrosion resistance against molten glass. It is the most widely used refractories used in the glass contact areas and superstructure of glass furnaces. According to the zircon content, it can be classified into 33#(33 wt%), 36#(36 wt%) and 41(41 wt%). 

 

It is made from high pure alumina powder, zircon sand and some additions. The mixture is melting in the electric arc furnaces. Then the melt is cast in a mold and cooled down to solid. Finally the cast product is processed by machine to get the final product. Desilication zircon sand may be added when manufacturing  AZS  36# and 41# to improve the zircon content. 

 

Fused Cast High Zirconia Block

Fused cast high zirconia block is made of artificial synthesis high purity raw materials through special casting process. Its crystalline structure mainly consists of baddeleyite and a small amount of glass phase. It is characterized by excellent high temperature & corrosion resistance, low blister and stoning potential and almost no pollution to molten glass. It is specially designed for high quality glass furnaces and special glass furnaces such as TV glass, Borosilicate glass, Alumina silicate glass, Halogen lighting glass, Opal glass and Fiber glass. 

 

Zircon Brick

Zircon brick is made from stable zircon sand with the zircon content over 64 %. Owing to its dense structure and low porosity, zircon brick is suitable for the breast wall of the melter, arc foot and bottom sealing layer. According to the amount of the apparent porosity, zircon brick can be divided into common zircon brick (20%), dense zircon brick(18%), and high dense zircon brick(8%).

 

Zircon Mullite Brick

Zircon mullite brick is made of high quality mullite sand and zircon powder by melting the raw materials in an electric arc furnace, casting, annealing and processing. The main crystal phases of zircon mullite brick include mullite, baddeleyite, corundum and a small amount of glass phase. It features high dense structure, high refractoriness under load, good thermal shock resistance, high mechanical strength, good wear resistance, high thermal conductivity, and great corrosion resistance to slag and molten glass. The can be used in long-life orifice rings, tank bottom, tank superstructure, perfume-bottle feeder, covers for working tanks and soda lime glass.

 

AZS Ramming Mass

AZS ramming mass is made of fused cast AZS particles and a small amount of additions. It has advantages of easy use, curing at room temperature, high strength at high temperature, stable thermal expansion and good corrosion resistance to molten glass. It is the ideal refractory material for bottom sealing. 

 

Rebound AZS Refractory 

Rebound AZS refractory is made from waste and recycled spent fused cast AZS materials. It is mainly used in the bottom, wall and regenerator checker work of glass furnaces. 

 

Sintered AZS

It has a consistent structure without shrinking hole. It has good corrosion-resistance, thermal resistance, stable thermal expansion, low thermal conductivity and high alkali corrosion resistance. It is used in bottom of glass melting and cooling zone, regenerator checker, L-shaped hanging wall of nose area, tank bottom, breast wall, checkers and side wall.
